On Thursday, the day before the show - Spank let us know he was feeling very ill, and wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to make it or not on Friday. He sounded terrible. We told him, listen - if you’re sick, you need to get better. He has a hectic schedule right now - working in the studio on an album, flying to L.A. at the end of this week to shoot a video, etc. The last thing a sick person needs to do is hang out in a packed night club, stress themselves even further, and get worse off than they already are. (Also for the record - Naeem has never canceled a show due to illness.)
After speaking to Naeem - I spoke to his manager, who advised me that counting on him to play, while he was ill, was taking a chance, and to be safe, I should cancel his performance. However, Naeem being the trooper that he is, said, no, Lori, I really want to to do this if I can, so please wait before making any kind of an announcement, and wait to hear from me tomorrow (Friday, the day of the show) and ill let you know how I feel.
At this point, having sold as many pre-sale tickets as we did, at a higher than normal cover - I wanted everyone coming out to the party to feel like they were getting what they expected, and if you think you guys are all up in the air and stressed about all of this, put yourself in our position, kind of a nail biter.
The budget to produce this party was high - and that is why the ticket price was what it was.
The line up was STACKED with top notch talent - in addition to having Spank Rock on the bill, we also had The Rapture, Busy P + So Me, JD Samson, Tippy, Dances With White Girls, Any Pry, and Eamon Harkin.
(And for the record - this was NOT a Spank Rock show, it was never billed as a Spank Rock show - it was billed as Jonathan K’s Bootay Shakin Blow Out.)
So, having the ability to reach out to GZA and add him to the bill, just in case Spank Rock couldn’t perform, was the call I made Thursday night at 10 pm. We could just left it as is, and had the party go on with no one taking over Naeem’s slot, but we didn’t feel right about that.
Studio B agreed to allow us to stay open another hour, so regardless of what happened, we were going to be able to accommodate both Spank And GZA playing.
And i’m kinda baffled (i know, “baffled” is very throw back toScooby Doo) that people are actually complaining, that Spank wasn’t there when a amazing talent - GZA “The Genius” was added to the line up. And by seeing the crowds reaction to his set, WOW. On the night, maybe 2 or 3 people said something about Spank having to cancel.
People get sick, if anyone here has a job, you’ve called in sick before. You are allowed sick days, and you make up what you missed.
Studio B does not suck, they were the venue we hosted the party in, putting blame on them, or anyone for that matter is kind of silly - cause “germs happen”.
When we definitively knew Spank was not playing, we posted it on the site, and also posted signs around the venue.
We are looking to reschedule a performance with Spank Rock in the future, and we’ve announced on our site the details on how we are handling that. Basically - when all gets sorted, those who purchased advance tickets, and those that are on the mailing list will get noticed before the public does about the show, and we will offer discounted tickets to them.
End of the day - people had a great time, that’s what matters. And we wish Naeem a speedy recovery.
www.mas-forever.com/blog is where you can do to stay updated if you like.
Thanks to all who came out and made it an incredible night!
